Black & White

Color is the visual representation of the feel and mood in an interior space. The philosophy of colors has deeper impact on life and lifestyle. Colors have psychological and symbolic effects, often shaping the perception, energy, and purpose of a room.

“Color is descriptive, Black and white is interpretive.”__Elliot Erwitt

White & Black has different representation in different faiths and cultures. For e.g.in western cultures white is traditionally linked to purity, wedding, peace, while black represents mourning, elegance and mystery. In indigenous cultures black symbolizes the earth while white represents the sky.

In the world of art & design black and white is often represented as

Black : mystery,  depth,  drama, sophistication

White: Purity, Peace, tranquility, openness, clarity

The interplay between black and white could create a range of emotions. Some tips to consider:

  • If the dominant color is black it creates intimacy and drama, while white dominant spaces feel larger and brighter.
  • It is important to know the expected end result while working with these two versatile colors.
  • To avoid monotony, different shades of black (eg. Charcoal, onyx) and white (e.g. cream, beige) can be used.
  • Incorporating different textures in these shades can help soften the look.
  • A third color can be introduced e.g. mustard, burgundy or blue to elevate the style.

“Gray is the queen of colors because she makes everyone else look good.”___Helen Van Wyk
